Yemen

Yemeni government forces said they began a counteroffensive on the southern Al-Jarahi front, backed by Giants Brigades units, as clashes with the Houthis renewed in Taiz and Hodeidah. The fighting matters because it affects the western coast front, where pressure on supply routes and nearby civilian centers can shape the wider Yemen war. The Yemeni army said warplanes carried out more than 15 strikes on Houthi positions, gatherings and vehicles along the western coast. A military source said government forces seized the Saeed Taha and Dhiban heights in Haifan district, giving them elevated positions over nearby front lines, and reported dozens dead and wounded and hundreds of civilians displaced Friday.

Algeria

Algeria sent a military air detachment with four Su-30 fighter jets to Niamey on August 30 after a failed coup attempt against Niger’s ruling junta. Algerian authorities said the deployment, which also included an IL-78 refueling aircraft and support teams, was the country’s first official foreign military deployment since 1973. That earlier mission supported Egypt during the Yom Kippur War, while authorities have signaled a doctrine allowing military deployment beyond Algeria’s borders. The move points to a more active Algerian posture as juntas and insurgent groups shape security calculations across the Sahel.

Madagascar

A Madagascar court sentenced the country’s former Senate president to 10 years in prison over a crackdown on protesters. The conviction ties accountability for the crackdown to a former holder of one of Madagascar’s highest legislative offices. The case matters beyond the defendant’s office because it places responsibility for action against protesters on a onetime leader of the national legislature.
