Niger’s military government regained control in Niamey after mutinous soldiers seized the airport’s Base 101 and attacked the presidential palace and national television. Russian Defence Ministry Africa Corps soldiers helped loyalist forces drive the rebels from the base, in the junta’s most serious internal challenge since it seized power in 2023. The Defence Ministry described the violence as a spontaneous outburst by soldiers who had breached military regulations. General Abdourahamane Tiani has led Niger since the July 2023 coup and has moved the country closer to Russia and away from Western partners including France.

Sri Lanka’s national drinking water standards and treatment systems have not ended chronic drinking water health and cost worries in low income Colombo communities, according to residents there. A water official said the system uses chlorination to remove bacteria, filtration to clear mud and additional purification for heavy minerals under national drinking water standards. Families in those communities say the burden falls hardest on households least able to pay for bottled water, home filters or safer housing. They describe the problem as a continuing public health issue and household budget strain in the country’s commercial capital, with health worries remaining after treatment.

Jordan

An Iranian military official said Iran launched missiles and drones toward U.S. forces in Jordan, Erbil in Iraq and Bahrain. After the launches and interceptions, President Donald Trump told Fox News, "We’re going to hit them hard."
