Nepal

Flash floods engulfed the Himalayan border region of Nepal and Tibet in late August after a glacier collapse. A provisional cross-border assessment put deaths at more than 1,270, with more than 4,700 people missing. Nepal said at least 20,000 homes would have to be rebuilt in its affected areas. Warning signs came before the disaster, and the region’s monitoring and emergency alert systems remained too limited to predict such floods.

India

Human Rights Watch says renewed ethnic violence in India’s northeastern Manipur state killed at least seven people in late August. The group said the violence involved Naga and Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur’s hill districts, and that 34 people have been killed since the current violence between the communities began in February 2026. The conflict has displaced tens of thousands of people in a state bordering Myanmar. Human Rights Watch said the unrest has consequences for ethnic relations and migration, as well as insurgency and border security. The group urged Indian authorities to address the violence, saying authorities are failing to protect vulnerable communities and address impunity.

Ghana

Ghana is requiring exporters of gold doré, a partly refined form of gold, to refine it in the country before shipping it abroad. The policy applies to gold doré exports and is aimed at shifting more processing beyond raw gold shipments. The push is meant to expand local refining, improve regulation and capture more public revenue from a sector central to Ghana’s economy.
