Nigeria’s government and Boko Haram have been observing a secret ceasefire for the past three months as part of negotiations between the two sides. The ceasefire matters now because those talks secured the release in June of 360 civilians abducted from Ngoshe village. Ngoshe lies in the foothills of the Mandara mountains on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon.

Philippines
Vice President Sara Duterte posted bail Saturday at the Quezon City justice hall. An arrest warrant had been issued Friday on charges that she publicly threatened to arrange the assassination of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and two other people. The case matters politically because it places one of the country’s highest elected officials in a criminal proceeding tied to alleged threats against the sitting president, and bail is the immediate legal consequence requiring Duterte to answer the warrant.

Indonesia
An eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano forced Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and four other Indonesian airports to suspend flights on Sunday. The Transport Ministry said ash tests confirmed volcanic ash had spread into the Soekarno-Hatta airport area, disrupting tens of thousands of passengers. The ministry cited intensified eruptive activity at the volcano as the reason for the disruption.
