Somalia

Somalia is bracing for El Niño-linked rains that are expected to bring significant rainfall and flooding before communities have recovered from the worst drought in years. El Niño has a greater than 90 percent probability of intensifying from October to December, with riverine communities along the Shabelle and Juba basins and displaced people in fragile shelters at high risk. Six million people need humanitarian assistance because of drought conditions, and intense rainfall could wash away homes and farmland, contaminate drinking water and force families to move again.

Mali

Africa Defense Forum reported that JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front cooperated in northern and central Mali in April 2026, carrying out joint attacks that put pressure on transport routes and state presence. The forum said the joint attacks included Gao, Sévaré and the Kidal region, with Bamako, Kati, Gao and Mopti also among places hit that month. Gao is important for transport and government presence, while Sévaré, near Mopti, supports air and logistics operations needed to hold the center. In the Kidal region, attacks around Aguelhoc and Anefis underscored the challenge to control in the north.

South Africa

Netflix says a new How to Ruin Diwali installment will launch on October 30 as part of a South African slate built around returning local franchises. The company says the lineup includes sequels, a new season and other franchise installments tied to How to Ruin, Seriously Single and Disaster Holiday. Blood Legacy Season 2 launched on September 25, Meet the Khumalos 2 is in production, and Netflix plans to debut Seriously Single Too and Another Disaster Holiday later this year. The slate signals Netflix’s continued investment in South African franchises as a local subscriber pitch.
