Papua New Guinea

Australia’s Smartraveller advice for Papua New Guinea warns travellers to exercise a high degree of caution because of serious crime, tribal violence and civil unrest, while also flagging reported cases of vaccine-derived polio, measles and rubella. The advice says Australians should speak with a doctor before travel and check that their vaccinations are up to date. The warning means travellers should verify immunisation before departure as part of planning for Papua New Guinea.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi authorities said Yemen’s Houthis launched strikes on four cities in southern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, wounding 73 people and setting oil installations ablaze. The strikes carried the six-month-old conflict involving Yemen’s Houthis into Saudi cities and included attacks on oil sites. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said continued attacks on Saudi Arabia could activate the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. He described the pact as becoming operational in cases of unprovoked aggression or a spillover from Yemen into Saudi Arabia, which could draw Pakistan and Turkiye into Saudi Arabia’s defence.

Tunisia

Dozens of journalists protested in Tunisia on Tuesday after the arrest of Mohamed Yousfi, editor in chief of the investigative website Alqatiba. Yousfi was detained in Tunis on Friday when he arrived for a radio interview and has remained in custody since. Tunisian prosecutors accuse him of receiving suspicious funds from abroad, and he faces financial-crime and money-laundering charges. Yousfi’s lawyer said the charges are unfounded, and the case has drawn attention because it involves a senior investigative media figure. Tunisia was once widely viewed as the Arab Spring’s leading democratic transition, and journalists continued protesting on Tuesday while Yousfi remained in custody.
