Honduras

U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres is urging the State Department to pressure Honduras over the July 6, 2026 eviction of the Garífuna community of San Juan in Tela and the prosecution of five community members. In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Torres said more than 200 Honduran National Police officers entered the community during the operation. The request puts U.S. diplomacy and human-rights concerns at the center of the dispute. Garífuna communities in Honduras have long pressed communal land claims along the Caribbean coast, where land disputes often intersect with tourism, real estate development and state security operations.

Tanzania

Recent demonstrations in Tanzania and Madagascar have placed Gen Z protesters at the center of political and economic pressure in both countries. The protesters, born between 1997 and 2012, have used social media to organize, carry out and document actions focused on economic strain, corruption and demands for accountability. Their activism reflects a pattern of youth-led protests that has recurred across Africa since 2024, linking country-level grievances to wider regional unrest.
