Election officials in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao completed final testing of vote-counting machines ahead of Monday’s first parliamentary election there. Election observers watched the tests as the Commission on Elections readied the autonomous area for its first vote to choose a parliament under the Bangsamoro system. The autonomy arrangement was designed to support the peace process in Muslim Mindanao after decades of conflict, making the election a test of confidence in the new political order. On Monday, voters are due to choose the Bangsamoro parliament, the next step in building self-government.

Anak Krakatau’s eruption sent ash as high as 50,000 feet and disrupted air travel in Indonesia, forcing eight airports to close. More than 2,000 flights were delayed, including around 963 flights to or from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, and more than 270,000 passengers were affected. Ash spread across parts of Java and Sumatra, including Jakarta and surrounding areas, while schools in Jakarta and Lampung shifted classes online. Flights at Bali’s main airport were canceled or rescheduled, particularly on Bali-Jakarta routes, and ships were barred from a three-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano.
Zimbabwe
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said he could stay in power until 2035, reviving debate over presidential term limits and succession politics in Zimbabwe. The remarks came about two months after he signed a constitutional amendment bill proposing to extend presidential terms from five years to seven years. Mnangagwa has said proposed constitutional changes would not be used to prolong his rule. The proposed shift from five-year to seven-year mandates would lengthen future presidential terms and reshape the succession timetable.
