Ethiopia
Tigrayan authorities accused Ethiopia’s federal government of carrying out another drone strike Tuesday in Hintle district, south of Mekelle. The federal government has carried out multiple drone strikes in Tigray in recent weeks and massed troops near the regional border. The Pretoria agreement ended the conflict in Tigray between 2020 and 2022, and renewed strikes and troop movements are adding strain to the peace process. The accord deteriorated further after the TPLF rejected African Union mediator Olusegun Obasanjo. The TPLF accused Obasanjo of siding with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and lacking impartiality, while saying it remains committed to dialogue and wants mediation outside Ethiopia.

Sudan
Sudan’s Darfur sanctions will stay in place for one month after the UN Security Council did not reach agreement on whether to extend the arms embargo nationwide. The existing regime includes an arms embargo tied to Darfur, so those covered by that regime remain barred from receiving arms during the extension. Supporters of a nationwide embargo said Sudan’s war is being fueled by weapons flows beyond Darfur, but the council left the broader proposal unresolved. Sudan remains in a major armed conflict, and the council will take up the question again after the one-month period.

South Sudan
South Sudan rejected United Nations warnings about serious risks surrounding its planned election. The vote is intended to advance the country’s long-delayed political transition after repeated postponements. The African Union urged donors to close South Sudan’s election funding gap, saying financing remains central to preparations. The UN warnings pointed to fresh violence, armed groups splintering, and weak accountability, raising concern that fighting could affect whether the vote stabilizes the country or deepens the political crisis. President Salva Kiir assented to constitutional changes on September 13, 2026, putting transition rules into the election process.
