Oman
A Panama-flagged tanker caught fire off Oman in the Strait of Hormuz area, and Oman’s navy evacuated the crew. The evacuation took place near one of the world’s most important oil and gas transit corridors, where regional tensions have put commercial shipping security under heightened scrutiny. Disruptions near Hormuz can force operators to reconsider routing, raise insurance costs and unsettle energy markets.

Papua New Guinea
Armed men entered the Panguna mine site in Bougainville, assaulted personnel, and set fire to heavy haul trucks and other equipment at the Lloyds Metals camp. The equipment belonged to Lloyds Metals, a foreign mining company with a camp at the site. President Ishmael Toroama condemned the arson attack, saying his government and the people of Bougainville would not be intimidated. Panguna matters because the government is trying to redevelop the mine, an effort Toroama said some are seeking to undermine.
Sri Lanka
Residents in Sri Lanka’s Hatton-Ruwanpura area protested over claims that Land Reforms Commission land had been given to a Chinese company. The disputed move matters because the land is held by the commission, and residents opposed transferring it to the company in their area. A Malima MP visited the protest site, after which the demonstration eased.
