Mali
At least 50 Malian soldiers and five Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries were killed when jihadists attacked the Dioura military camp in central Mali on Thursday. The assault was one of the deadliest attacks suffered by Mali’s army in more than a decade of conflict. Mali has been wracked since 2012 by a severe security crisis fueled by jihadists allied to al-Qaeda, criminal gangs and armed separatists.

Nepal
Nepal is demanding climate justice and compensation after late-August floods killed more than 1,300 people and left thousands missing. The August 26 disaster was triggered when part of a mountain glacier collapsed, sending water and mud into Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot regions and China’s Tibet region. Nepalese politicians say the country is bearing the brunt of climate change caused by other nations.

Pakistan
On July 6, 2023, a Court of Arbitration constituted under the Indus Waters Treaty and administered by the Permanent Court of Arbitration sided with Pakistan on the treaty’s interpretation. The ruling clears the way for India and Pakistan to continue arbitration over the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects. The treaty governs an Indus river system that supports irrigation, power generation and drinking water supply for hundreds of millions of people. The decision could shape how both countries handle water projects and later treaty disputes.
