Syria
Fuel-price protests spread on Tuesday to Qamishli, a Kurdish-majority city in northeast Syria, where hundreds demonstrated against higher diesel and petrol prices. Authorities announced increases of 40 percent for diesel and 26 percent for petrol on Sunday, citing higher global energy costs linked to the regional war. Protests have erupted for three consecutive days across northern, northwestern and northeastern Syria, marking the largest demonstrations against the new authorities. Northeast Syria remains politically sensitive as Damascus seeks to integrate Kurdish forces and areas into the state while tensions over Kurdish rights persist.

Lebanon
Lebanon’s president Joseph Aoun is pushing for a security agreement with Israel after Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon. He called that a possible prelude to peace and made clear that disarming Hezbollah is nonnegotiable. As he heads to France, Aoun is seeking renewed international backing for the Lebanese army’s deployment in the south. He also urged creation of a replacement force to prevent a security vacuum when UN observers leave the area. Israel’s military reported strikes on sites in southern Lebanon, while its chief of staff said Hezbollah forces south of the Litani River must be eliminated and the group disarmed.
Iran
Amnesty International is calling for international justice for Iranian officials it says were responsible for crimes against humanity during the 2022 Woman Life Freedom uprising. The nationwide protests began after Mahsa Amini died in custody following her arrest by Iran’s morality police. Amnesty says its report details murder, torture, enforced disappearance, imprisonment, rape and persecution used to crush the protests, and it points to Iranian officials and the security and detention apparatus under their control. The group says the call matters now because those it holds responsible remain in control of that apparatus and must face accountability to deter further massacres.
