Nigeria

Nigerian authorities say at least 48 people have died in Ondo State, southern Nigeria, after drinking locally brewed alcohol suspected of containing methanol. Officials reported 182 cases linked to the incident and said methanol poisoning can cause blindness, organ failure and death if not treated early. Nigerian authorities said the incident exposes risks from cheap, unregulated alcohol consumed in rural Nigeria, where informal production and sales are common. Nigeria’s food and drug regulator is enforcing a nationwide ban on alcohol sold in sachets and small plastic containers, and around 100 people were receiving treatment after the poisoning cases were reported.

Kenya

Kenya’s High Court ordered that a 15% government stake in Safaricom return to the state. The stake in Kenya’s dominant telecoms operator had been transferred to Vodacom, and the court found the deal unconstitutional. The order would reverse Vodacom’s holding of those government shares, change Safaricom’s ownership structure and affect investor interests in one of the country’s leading public assets. Vodacom Group said in a Johannesburg Stock Exchange filing that it will appeal to Kenya’s Court of Appeal and seek orders temporarily suspending implementation of the judgment while the case is pending.

Niger

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation approved up to $414 million in financing for Global Atomic’s Dasa uranium project in Niger. The Canadian miner said the debt facility will support a mine expected to supply uranium for nuclear power. The financing gives a U.S. development lender a role in Niger’s uranium sector after the military-led government expelled U.S. troops and relations with Washington deteriorated. It also supports business ties between the United States and Niger through a project led by a Canadian miner. Uranium projects carry strategic importance because of their role in nuclear energy, Global Atomic said Wednesday.
