Djibouti

Nearly 3,000 people have crossed from Yemen to Djibouti in less than a week as renewed fighting pushes families onto the Bab el-Mandeb sea route. The United Nations said Yemen’s escalating conflict has displaced at least 112,000 people inside the country in the past two weeks. Djibouti sits across the Bab el-Mandeb from Yemen on the route linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, a strategic chokepoint tied to Red Sea security and foreign military logistics. Newly arrived families, some gathered with animals outside UNHCR tents in the arid environment, are being housed in refugee sites near Obock.

Guatemala

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo accused organized crime networks and allied local politicians of financing fuel-price protests that turned violent in parts of Guatemala last week. In a Sunday night national address, Arévalo said local politicians worked with drug traffickers, gangs and organized crime to exploit public anger and destabilize the government. The unrest began over rising fuel prices, with road blockades preventing fuel from reaching some service stations. Protesters and riot police also clashed along the main Pacific highway in Villa Nueva.

Peru

Peru’s Education Ministry has taken operational control of the Naval Lyceum in Peru, a school linked to the country’s navy, through 2027 after prosecutors alleged that students were involved in sexual abuse. The move gives the ministry responsibility for running the school’s operations and oversight during that period, including safety measures affecting the school community. Prosecutors are seeking to detain six students for four months while the case proceeds.
