Democratic Republic of the Congo
The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in Ituri Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo a public health emergency of international concern, after more than 1,000 confirmed cases and 269 deaths by late June 2026. The outbreak has spread across at least three health zones, including Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. Health authorities were notified on May 5, after a nurse sought care in Bunia in late April and later died. Laboratory confirmation came on May 14. Insecurity, displacement and weak health infrastructure in eastern Congo are complicating surveillance, vaccination and treatment.

Pakistan
Pakistani officials said security forces ended a roughly 20-hour standoff with militants at a police compound in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, after a coordinated attack killed 21 people. The assault underscored the threat to police and religious sites in the province, with attackers striking a mosque inside the compound. Officials said a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the mosque before gunmen stormed the police facility. Several militants then took positions inside the complex, leading to a shootout and a prolonged security operation that ended the siege at the site.
Bangladesh
Security forces tightened checks across Dhaka after six crude-bomb blasts and multiple bus arson incidents in the capital. Police said four crude bombs exploded in the Jatrabari area and two more blasts occurred at Kamalapur station, despite heightened security in the city. Officials set up checkpoints and searches at entry and exit points to Dhaka, measures that can slow major transport routes and daily commerce in one of South Asia’s largest and most densely populated capitals.
