Ghana
Ghana’s Western Regional Security Council has stepped into a dispute at Gwira Banso in the Nzema East Municipality over Betterland Ghana Limited’s mineral exploration and planned shift to large-scale mining. The council brought company representatives, traditional authorities and community opponents into talks, putting objections alongside support for the project. Opponents raised concerns about Betterland’s operations and its planned transition, while the Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Council and some youth openly backed the company’s presence. The outcome matters because it could determine whether exploration gives way to large-scale mining in the community.

Togo
West African laboratory scientists meeting in Lomé called on governments to strengthen disease-outbreak detection and invest in diagnostics to help prevent another major health crisis. The scientists said health systems across West Africa are becoming weaker and urged governments to cooperate regionally on disease detection. The meeting in Togo addressed the region’s dependence on vaccines from Western countries and cited lessons from Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks in the past decade. Kossi Kabo, head of the Association of Medical Biologists of Togo and a co-chair of the congress, said, “We need to anticipate these outbreaks,” as scientists pressed in Lomé for stronger surveillance and diagnostic capacity.

Tanzania
Tanzania has inaugurated the 2,115-megawatt Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, lifting national generation capacity above peak demand and putting transmission expansion next on the agenda. President Samia Suluhu Hassan formally opened the plant at Stiegler’s Gorge on the Rufiji River on August 22, 2026. The project has raised generation capacity to 4,646 megawatts. Peak demand is 2,271 megawatts, creating a surplus that could support exports and future energy security. Officials say the grid must expand to carry the new hydropower supply, while clean-cooking advocates see the surplus as a chance to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal.
