Mali

Unions representing workers at Barrick Mining’s Loulo-Gounkoto gold complex in Mali have issued strike notices to management over claims that workers are owed unpaid wages and have other unresolved grievances. Reuters says the notices target one of Mali’s major gold operations. Gold is a major source of export earnings and state revenue for Mali, where military-led authorities are pressing for greater control over natural-resource income. Sahel governments have also pushed foreign mining companies for a larger share of that income.

Egypt

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, or CATL, and BME plan to launch what they said would be Egypt’s first battery pack manufacturing facility. The plant would add higher-value production capacity to Egypt’s electric-vehicle supply chain, moving the sector beyond basic vehicle assembly. The move also puts Egypt in a wider North African race for battery and EV-related investment as CATL and BME move toward production in the country.

Algeria

Algeria received 3.5 million tourists in 2024, up 10% from the previous year, according to tourism ministry figures. The African Travel and Tourism Association cited Western Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Netherlands, along with the Middle East as leading sources of tourism demand for Algeria. Algeria has implemented visa-on-arrival access for international visitors. Air Algerie ranked among the top five African airlines by number of seats in ATTA’s Africa in the Air report. A larger tourism sector could help Algeria diversify an economy still heavily reliant on hydrocarbons.
