Ethiopia

Amhara Fano factions announced a new alliance aimed at removing Ethiopia's federal government and creating an inclusive transitional administration. If it holds together, the alliance could intensify fighting, complicate mediation efforts and affect Red Sea security calculations across the Horn of Africa.

Yemen

Houthi forces are advancing in western Yemen, pushing families into areas where aid capacity is already thin. The offensive also threatens to cut Saudi-backed forces off from access to the Red Sea coast. The fighting risks worsening Yemen’s humanitarian crisis while adding another layer of pressure around Red Sea security, where the conflict’s effects reach beyond the immediate battlefield.

China

China is offering expanded military cooperation to 41 African countries as part of a broader security push on the continent. Defense Minister Dong Jun made the offer at the 4th China-Africa Peace and Security Forum in Beijing in June 2024, addressing military representatives and diplomatic envoys from the African Union and 41 African states. Dong described the initiative as long-term cooperation based on “equality and mutual benefit,” framing it as a structured platform for defense ties focused on helping African countries confront security threats on land and at sea. The offer would deepen China’s role in African defense cooperation and maritime security.
