Democratic Republic of the Congo
An Ebola outbreak in Ituri province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread across at least three health zones and exceeded 1,000 confirmed cases, the World Health Organization said. A nurse sought care in Bunia in late April 2026 and later died, and health authorities were notified on May 5 before laboratory confirmation on May 14. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern as cases appeared in Bunia, Rwampara and Mongbwalu. Eastern Congo’s insecurity, displacement and strained clinics can complicate contact tracing, isolation and vaccination, making the first weeks of response critical. By late June 2026, the World Health Organization said the outbreak had more than 1,000 confirmed cases and 269 deaths.

Peru
Susy Aponte, a journalist and candidate for regional governor in Peru’s northern Áncash region, was shot dead while speaking with reporters at a campaign event. Her killing removed a contender from the regional governor’s race and underscored risks for campaign security and for candidates who also work in the press. Aponte’s death left voters without one gubernatorial option in Peru’s local elections.

Sudan
At least 11 miners were killed and 30 were injured when a shaft collapsed at an informal gold mine in northeastern Sudan. The miners were part of Sudan’s widespread small-scale gold sector, where informal operations provide work for many people. The disaster left workers and nearby mining communities facing deadly losses and injuries as the country’s war has pushed parts of Sudan toward famine.
