Pakistan said it carried out airstrikes on militant hideouts in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, killing 28 fighters. Taliban-run authorities in Kabul said villages were damaged, sharply raising the risk of retaliation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan frontier. Recent cross-border attacks have deepened tensions with the Taliban, while Pakistan’s strikes hit what it called militant sanctuaries across the border. The confrontation could bring more strikes, reprisals and displacement in the frontier area, with refugee pressure adding to the strain.

Botswana

Botswana Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe says the country wants to raise its 15 percent stake in De Beers. The push comes as Anglo American moves ahead with plans to divest its 85 percent holding in the diamond company. Gaolathe says Botswana is seeking a larger role in De Beers as that sale process advances. De Beers is the world’s biggest diamond producer by value, and diamonds have underpinned Botswana’s economy since their discovery there in 1967. A larger holding would give Botswana more control over a strategic national asset tied closely to the country’s economy.
