Myanmar
Human Rights Watch says women held in Myanmar prisons face widespread torture, sexual violence and life-threatening medical neglect. The group said prison authorities beat some women prisoners with sticks, chains, metal pipes and slingshots, and subjected some to electric shocks and cigarette burns. Since the military seized power in February 2021, civil war has gripped Myanmar, killing about 100,000 people and displacing more than 3.5 million. Human Rights Watch said more than 6,600 women and 640 children are among more than 30,000 political prisoners detained since the coup.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s High Court convicted 14 of the 24 men accused of direct involvement in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which killed 279 people. A three-judge bench read out the decision Tuesday after a five-year trial, with sentencing to take place later. The charges included murder and conspiracy to commit terrorism. Nine defendants were acquitted, while another was found guilty of some charges.
