Iraq

Iraqi officials said Turkey agreed to begin a phased pullout from the Bashiqa-Zelikan military camp in northern Iraq after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani at the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Under the plan, Turkish forces would withdraw from the camp before control passes to Iraq’s federal government. The camp has been a source of dispute for years, with Turkey saying its troops were there to train local forces against Islamic State. Iraq has objected to the deployment as a violation of its sovereignty.

Syria

Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa told the U.N. General Assembly that peace with Israel is possible, while vowing the Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory. He criticized Israeli military activity in Syria and demanded that Israeli forces withdraw from the security zone, a buffer area along the 1974 disengagement line east of the Israeli-held Golan Heights. The dispute centers on Syria’s claim to the territory and Israel’s control of it. Al-Sharaa said Syria remains committed to the 1974 agreement, which set rules for separating the two sides after war. He said Israeli forces should return to the positions they held on December 8, 2024.

Palestine

The U.N. trade agency UNCTAD said in its latest assessment that Gaza is facing the worst economic collapse ever recorded, with reconstruction needs estimated at more than 70 billion dollars for Gaza alone. The agency said poverty affects about nine in ten people in Gaza, showing the scale of deprivation alongside physical destruction. It said the damage is expected to shape displacement, aid dependency, governance and postwar planning, putting reconstruction costs and poverty at the center of any settlement.
