Nepal

United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said catastrophic flooding in Nepal has killed at least 903 people. He said more than 4,200 people are missing, a figure far higher than the confirmed death toll. Dujarric said blocked highways are slowing rescue operations and aid delivery in the hardest-hit areas, where humanitarian workers are trying to reach communities cut off by flooding. Nepal’s mountainous terrain and fragile road network can make emergency work difficult across the country after extreme Himalayan weather, compounding the challenge in the flood zone.

Somalia

Save the Children said more than 26,000 people in Somalia are expected to fall into catastrophic food insecurity in the coming months, one step from famine. New Integrated Food Security Phase Classification analysis warned that internally displaced children and families in Baidoa are at risk of IPC Phase 5 between October and December 2026. IPC Phase 5 is characterized by starvation and collapse of livelihoods. Families already hit by drought are bracing for heavy rains and flooding driven by above-average rainfall.

Togo

Togo’s former defense minister Essossimna Marguerite Gnakadé was arrested on September 17, 2025, after she publicly condemned violence during a month of protests, Amnesty International said. Amnesty’s 2026 annual report said she was arrested on a charge of inciting rebellion. Global Voices documented that security forces killed at least seven demonstrators and arrested more than 140 people during the protests, and described the arrests as part of a wider civil society crackdown in Togo. That made the former defense minister’s arrest politically important because it moved the confrontation beyond street protests and into senior political circles.
