Nigeria’s Security and Civil Defence Corps presented its suspended Niger State commandant and other officers at its national headquarters in Abuja after the Interior Ministry said 37 people died in custody. The ministry said the victims were among 67 people detained after anti-illegal mining operations around the Wishi and Luko areas of Niger State on September 15 and 16. The federal government suspended the commandant and 20 other NSCDC personnel. The interior minister set up a 10-member independent committee with two weeks to establish the circumstances of the arrests and detention.

Niger

Islamic State-linked militants killed around 50 Nigerien soldiers in near-simultaneous attacks on military detachments near Abala and Konni, according to Niger’s military. The strikes hit more than 200 kilometers apart, with one in Tillabéri near the Mali border and the other in Konni department near the Nigeria border. The attacks point to expanding militant mobility and growing pressure on Niger’s junta-led state. The violence adds pressure on Niger’s army and border security as the wider Sahel crisis strains regional counterterrorism operations.
