Ethiopia

Fighting intensified this week in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region as federal and Tigrayan forces battled, marking a renewed escalation after the 2020 to 2022 civil war. The clashes have raised concern that Ethiopia could slide toward a wider war involving Tigrayan forces. During the earlier conflict, the Tigray region was cut off from the world and about 600,000 people were killed.

Libya

The UN Support Mission in Libya warned that attacks on or interference with the country’s energy infrastructure could trigger sanctions under relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The warning came as the Sharara-Zawiya oil pipeline remained closed, causing losses in crude production and public revenues. The mission said the closure is also raising risks to fuel supplies and electricity generation.

Djibouti

Djibouti Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf told the United Nations General Assembly his country needs international support as refugees flee renewed fighting in Yemen. He said Djibouti cannot handle the arrival of at least 2,000 people crossing the Red Sea without help, putting pressure on reception capacity and aid needs. Youssouf said the situation could strain support systems and widen humanitarian pressure across the Red Sea region.
