Guatemala
Guatemala has received its first U.S. weapons shipment in nearly 50 years, a package worth more than $5 million that arrived on September 21. The shipment includes rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers and magazines, and Defense Minister Henry Sáenz framed it as both a security procurement and a diplomatic signal. Sáenz said the delivery showed renewed trust from the United States, which he called Guatemala’s primary strategic partner, and recognition of Guatemala as a serious partner. The transfer follows nearly 50 years of a U.S. arms embargo on Guatemala.

The expert said post-vote actions targeting opposition forces are raising concerns about Zambia’s democratic future. The warning framed the situation as a human rights and security concern in one of the region’s more competitive democratic systems, with public trust in future elections at risk.

Haiti
Eighteen suspects accused in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse have been extradited to the United States to face proceedings over their alleged involvement in the killing. Moïse was assassinated while serving as president, and the killing deepened Haiti’s political instability and public distrust in governing institutions. The extraditions move the suspects into U.S. proceedings, shifting part of the case outside Haiti as the country confronts the fallout from the assassination.
