Malaysia

Malaysia has begun returning Myanmar nationals from Manjung in Perak state under a voluntary repatriation program, starting with 1,476 people, the Home Ministry said. The ministry said the first group agreed to return, and that authorities would carry out the process safely using two Myanmar navy warships and a hospital ship. Myanmar nationals have fled conflict and military repression since the 2021 coup, and the U.N. refugee agency and rights groups have warned that conditions in Myanmar remain unsafe for returnees. Malaysia’s Home Ministry says 5,000 Myanmar nationals will be repatriated in stages.

Indonesia

Indonesia is battling forest and peatland fires that have covered parts of the country, Malaysia and Singapore with toxic haze, raising health risks for residents. Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry said more than 202,000 hectares burned between January and July, up 69% from the same period last year. Satellite analysis by Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency estimated nearly 896,000 hectares had burned by the end of August. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has pursued criminal charges and suspended licenses, while the president ordered agencies to focus on peat fires. The ministry cites El Niño, slash-and-burn land clearing and long-term forest degradation as major drivers.

Sudan

Sudan’s war is deepening a food-security emergency, as the Food and Agriculture Organization says disrupted farming and blocked aid access are putting local food production and immediate supplies at risk. FAO is seeking more emergency agriculture funding to help farmers grow staple crops, keep livestock healthy, and secure animal feed. Without that support, harvests could fall, animals could die, and families already facing severe food insecurity could see hunger worsen. The agency also urged more funding to limit the expected impact of El Niño on food security across the Horn of Africa.
