Algeria
Algeria has severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates after years of rising tensions between the two governments. It ordered the Emirati ambassador to leave within 48 hours. Algeria also closed its airspace to UAE-registered non-commercial civilian aircraft and military aircraft, while commercial flights to Algiers are exempt through the end of 2026.

Somalia
Somalia’s hunger crisis is expected to worsen, with heavy flooding projected and aid cuts already straining services. The I-P-C food security analysis projects 5.4 million people will face crisis levels of hunger or worse between October and December 2026. In Bay region, displaced families have lost homes, crops and livestock to flooding. Funding cuts are forcing health and nutrition centers to close, deepening the risk of food insecurity and acute malnutrition, especially among children.

Tunisia
Tunisia’s public debt has topped 82 percent of gross domestic product while a deal with the International Monetary Fund remains stalled, leaving President Kais Saied governing under heavy financing pressure. Analysts say the debt burden and IMF impasse have limited the government’s options as households face high living costs. The pressure deepened during a hard summer in 2026, when temperatures neared 50 degrees Celsius and electricity demand hit a record 6,000 megawatts on July 21. Analysts say the next major financing test is whether Tunisia can revive an IMF agreement or secure alternative financing.
