South Sudan

President Salva Kiir has dissolved South Sudan’s transitional unity government and appointed a caretaker administration ahead of the country’s planned first national elections. The decree ended a power-sharing arrangement set up under a 2018 peace deal that halted years of civil war. The dissolution leaves South Sudan’s first national elections as the next major step in the transition after Kiir’s government shake-up.
