Myanmar

The United Nations said reports indicated Myanmar's military carried out an airstrike near the border with Bangladesh, killing 50 people and wounding dozens more on Tuesday. The attack hit Kyauktaw in Rakhine State. The western state borders Bangladesh, making the strike especially sensitive because violence there can carry cross-border risk, and the United Nations expressed alarm as the deaths and injuries added to civilian casualties in the area.

Nicaragua

In summer 2026, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced a change to end national elections, cutting off the national vote as a route for political change in Nicaragua. The move would leave voters without national elections as a way to choose leaders or shift power through the ballot box. Those seeking an Organization of American States meeting are asking the regional diplomatic body to convene and take action on Nicaragua.

Pakistan

At the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned that any diversion of Indus waters would be treated as an “act of war,” tying the issue to India-Pakistan tensions over the water-sharing pact. The warning matters because the Indus Waters Treaty is central to relations between the two countries, with high stakes for both. Sharif said trust would return when guns give way to handshakes. He also accused terrorist groups based in Afghan sanctuaries of trying to destabilize Pakistan and said Hindutva ideology fuels religious hatred. India’s S. Jaishankar used his UN remarks to address terrorism and the treaty.
