El Salvador
El Salvador will hold its presidential election on Feb. 28, 2027, under a calendar set by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal that gives President Nayib Bukele a timetable to seek another term. The Legislative Assembly approved constitutional changes on July 31, 2025, allowing indefinite presidential reelection, extending the presidential term from five to six years and eliminating presidential runoff elections. The overhaul replaced the prior constitutional bar on consecutive presidential reelection and could let Bukele seek a third term. Public polling has shown Bukele remains highly popular, with support tied to his anti-gang crackdown, turning the new calendar into an active political contest.

Burkina Faso
Four years into Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s rule, Burkina Faso remains under military leadership, and Traoré openly says the country is not a democracy. Traoré seized power in a September 2022 coup in Ouagadougou, as Burkina Faso was battling a jihadist insurgency and large parts of the country were outside state control. He promised to restore security, compared his rule to Thomas Sankara’s legacy and promoted national, economic and cultural autonomy. Rights groups and journalist organizations say some journalists, magistrates and civil society members have been abducted or forced to the front lines as anti-jihadist reinforcements.
