Myanmar
Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals repatriated from Malaysia arrived in Yangon on Sunday despite warnings from the UN refugee agency and rights groups that conditions for return remain unsafe. The returnees, including 86 women, had been convicted of illegal stay and other immigration violations in Malaysia. Malaysia’s Home Ministry said they are among 5,000 Myanmar nationals to be repatriated in stages, while 10,388 others were held in immigration detention centers. India
Police detained hundreds of protesters in central New Delhi on Friday as youth activists and opposition parties demanded the resignation of India’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. They focused on Kumar because he leads the election authority responsible for administering India’s election system, turning the protest into a confrontation over who oversees voting. Authorities shut metro stations leading to central Delhi, suspended internet services and blocked entries to Parliament Street and the Jantar Mantar protest strip. The protest also drew members of a youth movement active earlier in the summer around the time Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan left office.
